There are usually no strict universal height/weight standards for buggy passengers, but each company has its own technical restrictions and common sense safety rules.
Typical weight restrictions
Most often, the total weight per seat or per buggy is limited based on the load capacity of the suspension and braking system. For example, organizers of a desert buggy tour may write something like “up to 110-120 kg per person” or “up to 220-240 kg per two-seater buggy.”
– If the weight is above average, the organizers usually ask:
– to notify them in advance when booking;
– to seat the heavier participant in the front/driver’s seat or provide a separate buggy so as not to overload one axle.
– On family tours, the **combined weight of an adult and a child** is sometimes limited to ensure that the child seat and seat belts work correctly.
Height and seating
There are fewer formal restrictions on height, but it is technically important that the person:
– can reach the pedals (for the driver) and can rest their feet on the floor;
– fits comfortably under the safety bar, can wear a helmet, and can fasten their seatbelt without tension.
– Very tall passengers (over 195–200 cm) are sometimes advised to:
– choose buggy models with a more spacious seating position;
– sit in the front/be among the first to board so that they can choose a seat where their knees do not rest against the dashboard.
What matters in practice?
– For tour organizers, it is not “height or weight as such” that is critical, but rather:
– whether it is possible to **fasten the seat belt safely**;
– whether the total weight of the participants exceeds the **maximum load** for a particular buggy model;
– whether it is comfortable for a person to sit in such a way that they do not lose stability on bumps/in dunes.
– If you are significantly overweight or very tall, it is better to:
– directly provide the operator with your actual measurements (height, weight);
– inquire about their recommended configuration (separate buggy, specific model, seat location).
