Basic preparation for a desert buggy tour boils down to protection from the sun and sand, proper clothing, water, and paying close attention to the briefing.
Clothing and equipment
- Wear light, loose-fitting cotton/linen clothing with long sleeves and pants, closed-toe shoes (sneakers/trainers), sunglasses, a hat, and be sure to use high SPF sunscreen on exposed skin.
- Bring a bandana or thick scarf for your face and neck: it protects against sand and partially from the sun; the rest (helmet, goggles, sometimes a scarf) is usually provided by the tour operator.
Health, water, and well-being
- Eat a normal meal before departure (not on a full stomach, but not hungry either) and do not drink alcohol: shaking and heat combined with alcohol greatly increase the risk of feeling unwell.
- Drink water in small portions before and during the tour, avoid drinking super cold drinks all at once; if you have chronic heart problems, high blood pressure, are pregnant, or have recent injuries, it is better to refrain from such activities or consult your doctor.
Documents and insurance
- Have the document required by the organizer with you (usually a copy of your passport or a photo of the passport page, sometimes data for obtaining a permit to visit a desert area), as well as valid travel medical insurance with the option of active recreation/motorized activities.
- For children, check in advance the age restrictions for driving and the possibility of participating in the tour as a passenger; sometimes the operator requires written consent/a receipt from parents.
Rules of conduct and safety precautions
Be sure to listen carefully to the instructions, ask questions about driving, always keep your distance, do not overtake the guide, avoid sudden maneuvers and braking on sand, and do not use your phone while driving.
Keep an eye on your seat belts and seating position, do not stand up in a moving buggy, and only take photos and videos at stops specifically designated by the guide.
If you write which emirate you plan to book a buggy tour in and at what time of year, we can tailor recommendations on clothing, time of day, and health restrictions specifically to your conditions.
