Initially, the term “buggy” referred to lightweight vehicles with a frame and a powerful engine, but now it is used to describe all-terrain vehicles with a car-like seating position. They have a lot in common with classic quad bikes, such as four-wheel drive, off-road tires, and high ground clearance. However, despite the similarities in design, there are still more differences. Seating and comfort
Buggy. The seating and controls are similar to those in a car, making the vehicle more comfortable on long trips. The roof, doors, and windshield protect against dirt and precipitation flying from under the wheels, so you can ride in any weather and keep your clothes clean.
Quad bike. The seating and controls are similar to those of a motorcycle. It is less comfortable to sit in, but you can shift your body weight to help the vehicle overcome obstacles, such as rocking it in mud. In general, riding an ATV involves more physical activity.
Number of seats
Buggy. Most buggies are designed for a driver and two passengers, but there are also more spacious models.
Quad bike. Models for active riding are single-seaters, while universal and touring models are usually two-seaters.
Load capacity
Buggy. Cargo models have a rear body that can hold about 400 kg and has a tipping mechanism for easy unloading. Touring and sports buggies also have a rear luggage compartment, but it is more modest, with a capacity of about 100 kg.
Quad bike. It has luggage racks at the front and rear. Their load capacity is 60-80 kg on average. To transport something heavier, you can attach a trailer, but please note that quad bikes have less towing capacity than buggies.
Safety
Buggies. Buggies have a longer wheelbase and wider track than ATVs, which means they are more stable and less prone to tipping over. This is noticeable when cornering at high speed or climbing steep inclines. In addition, multi-point seat belts and a sturdy frame protect the driver and passenger in dangerous situations.
Quad bike. The only place where quad bike are safer than buggies is on frozen bodies of water. Lightweight vehicles exert less pressure on the surface, and in an emergency, the driver can quickly jump off.
Ease of control
Buggy. A full cabin provides a feeling of safety, so a beginner will get used to a buggy faster than a quad bike.
Quad bike. Riding on a flat road is easy and safe. But overcoming obstacles on powerful equipment can be scary at first.
Passability
Buggy. Buggies have greater suspension travel and ground clearance than ATVs. This improves passability on difficult terrain—there is less risk of getting stuck or having wheels hang over the edge.
Quad bike are lightweight, weighing as little as 300 kg. Their light weight allows them to traverse sand and other unstable surfaces without getting stuck.
Another advantage of quad bikes is their small size: as a rule, they are less than 250 cm long and up to 130 cm wide. This allows them to bypass problem areas.
