The minimum protective gear required for riding a quad bike is a helmet, eye protection, gloves, and closed-toe shoes; for more aggressive riding, add body and joint protection.

The bare minimum

  1. Helmet (preferably a full-face motorcycle helmet or motocross helmet): protects the head from impact, branches, stones, and falls; mandatory for both the driver and passenger.
  2. Goggles or visor: protect the eyes from sand, dust, wind, and stones; if the helmet does not have a visor, separate protective goggles with a strap are required.
  3. Gloves: protect hands from abrasions, branches, and cold, improve grip on the handlebars; motorcycle gloves or thick sports gloves are suitable.
  4. Closed shoes: sturdy sneakers or boots with stiff soles that support the ankle and cover the toes.

Highly desirable additional protection

Body protection (“turtle”/armor) or jacket with built-in inserts: chest, back, shoulders, elbows.

Knee pads and, if possible, elbow pads: minimal protection when falling on your side.

Buff/mask or balaclava: protection for the face and neck from dust, sand, and sun.
